Ancient Yucatan

Yucatan - a flat, covered with jungle peninsula, favored by the ancient Maya Indians. If you get on any of the pyramids, the remnants of a vanished civilization, the eyes will view the visibility of a few tens of kilometers in any direction - and there was not a single river.

In most of the peninsula there is no fact that the rivers, creeks and even, there was none and in the heyday of the Maya: Yucatan complex soft limestone karst easily, and the water after heavy but brief showers quickly away from the surface through cracks in the rock strata. Leaves shallowly: aquifer lies not below sea level, and the average height of the peninsula is only 8 meters. Underground water is doing his usual work on the development of caves, and as a result of a few meters under solid-looking surface lies a quaint three-dimensional maze of underground streams, rivers and lakes - perhaps the most well-known system of underground waters on the planet.

This maze is connected to the surface through numerous sinkholes in diameter from 2 to 20 m - they are called tsenotami or Cenote (cenote), from Indian Hispanicize "dzonot" - "something deeper". Cenote around - the only sources of fresh water in most parts of the peninsula - in ancient times, and concentrated towns and villages of Maya: Neil for their civilization were scattered in the jungle thousands of small karst wells. And today, most villages are located next to the Cenote, Cenote others mark the boundaries between poceleniyami.

Cenote Maya were sacred to double - as the only source of drinking water for 9-month dry season, and the gates of Xibalba. A typical example is the famous Chichen Itza ("chi" in Mayan language means "mouth", "whose" - "Well," and "Itza" - the name of the Maya. "Mouths of the wells itsev" - that's the literal translation of the name of city). About 300 meters from the main complex of buildings is Sacred Cenote - a hole in the ground for more than 60 meters in diameter, with vertical walls and a depth of 10 meters, not counting the multimeter thickness of silt on the bottom. The main church of the city, dedicated to Kukulkanu, was called a facade to the well and connected with the special road, paved with stone slabs. On the edge of Cenote for the convenience of worship was located before a special platform.

iPod Technology applied to Thermostats

Over the summer, we got word that a couple of unnamed ex-Apple engineers were getting ready to unveil an unnamed product, under the guise of an unnamed startup. As it turns out, that startup was Nest Labs, and those Apple alums were none other than Tony Fadell, longtime SVP of Apple's iPod division, and lead engineer Matt Rogers. And yes, the product they had to share makes fine use of a click wheel.

But if you thought they'd be cooking up a next-gen music player, you'd be wrong. Instead, the pair have been designing a thermostat, of all things, dubbed the Nest. In addition to being the most stylish model ever to grace a dining room wall, it promises the kind of intelligence we've come to expect in other household appliances -- just not thermostats, per se. It'll go on sale next month for $249 in places like Best Buy, but we managed to snag an early sneak peek. Find some photos below and when you're done, join us past the break where we'll explain how it works.
